Buying Your First Set of Golf Clubs: Spend vs Splurge

Insights

If you want to start golfing but aren't sure exactly what clubs you should buy to get started, you aren’t alone. It can be confusing as to what equipment you really need, as well as and what is really worth splurging on. If you're not sure where to begin, here's our take on five things golfers can go cheap on, and five things that are worth splurging for.

Golf Equipment You Can Go Cheap On

1. Cart

In almost all cases, you won't need to buy your own golf cart, as you can typically rent one at the golf course. And believe it or not, many courses are actually better to walk on, (plus you get in extra exercise!).

2. Bag

The brand (or price) of your golf bag does not matter so much as long as it is lightweight and durable. Pro tip: purchasing a bag with dual-shoulder straps will do the job and make your day at the course easier. If you are loyal to a certain brand, then splurge on their bags, but if not, you will be just fine with a great off-brand bag for an amazing price.

3. Gloves

With so many golf glove brands to choose from, it may seem like there is a big difference in each glove. However, in reality, most golf gloves are actually very similar. Sure, there are some brands that are better than others, but when you are just starting out you might not even notice the difference. Keep in mind that if you do start to play regularly, your gloves are likely to experience wear and tear, and so you may need to purchase multiple pairs.

4. Putters

There are always new putters hitting the market that claim to have "the latest technology" or "most modern design". However, a putter is not necessarily something you need to blow your budget on, because it’s really more about what feels good for you, not what the latest trend is. The good news is, once you find a putter that you like, you can keep it forever. In general, putting is about confidence, not about the putter itself.

5. Hybrids

Often golf stores convince you that you need to buy expensive high-end hybrid clubs, but you don’t. A hybrid can be a great option if you are struggling with your irons, but it’s not necessary to splurge on them. A hybrid is a unique club so it’s best to just choose whatever feels best for you as you swing.

Golf Goods To Splurge On

1. Shoes

Your shoes are arguably the most important thing to spend a good chunk of change on. Most likely you will be doing a lot of walking on the golf course, which is why it is wise to invest in a high quality and comfortable shoe to support you throughout your golf game. Keep in mind when you are buying new golf spikes, it’s best to go with comfort over style.

2. Irons

It’s true that with some golf clubs you are just as well buying a cheaper brand or knock-off, but since irons are of top importance when it comes to golf equipment, it’s critical that you invest in a quality full set of irons. Take into careful consideration the quality of an iron because these are the clubs that you will use the most frequently  throughout your rounds of golf. Irons can be very expensive, but it’s worth every penny if you plan to play regularly.

3. Lessons

If you’re just getting started with golf, spending money on quality lessons can be one of the wisest investments you make. Having a professional provide you with customized advice and pointers to help you improve is extremely helpful and worthwhile.

4. Drivers

Spending on quality drivers is important because every year companies release their new, updated drivers with their latest advances in the way the clubs are designed. Some drivers that are older or off lesser quality are dull, and therefore produce less pop, but driver technology improvements are real and can make a difference. So, if you want to have the best of the best, you need to prepare to spend.

5. Memberships

The biggest expense you are likely to incur as a golfer will be the actual rounds you play. However, it’s worth the splurge to be able to play at certain golf clubs and courses. Also, memberships and passes are not always as expensive as you might think. So, if you thought that memberships were only for the elite golfers, think again! Many courses now provide summer memberships that allow you to play every day for a lower price. Pro tip: find courses with no initiation fees to help lower your overall membership cost.
